I joined some friends last night and went to Sanctuaria, in The Grove, on Manchester to become a member of their new cocktail club. Members are given a menu of 150 (!) cocktails each time they come in and they are invited to try each of the cocktails -- ideally not all on one visit (this is not Man v. Food, after all). The management keeps track of which cocktails have been sampled so that, one by one, you can check them off your list. After finishing the entire list of cocktails, a member is entitled to certain benefits, most notably, every third drink is free for the rest of the member's (or the restaurant's) life.
The list is impressive in its breadth and in the complexity of the drinks and their ingredients. Half of the list is devoted to classic cocktails; the other half comprises the bartenders' creations. The bartenders are very proud of their hand-made mixers and liqueurs.
It's an enjoyable way to try a lot of new things. The cost is $20 for the registration, which includes the first drink, and $8 per drink thereafter.
I figure it will take me several years to come close to conquering this list, but the journey should be fun.
