Clock is ticking...

for the weekend breakfast at Memphis Minnies.

They are testing a breakfast menu and earlier opening time for the next couple of months, at that point they will re-evaluate so the food described below may not be available after that time.

I live in lower haight and have been a big fan of Memphis Minnies for years. About a month ago, they started experimenting with Southern breakfasts. Being from the South, I was thrilled so Michael & I began working our way through the menu.

Biscuits with sausage gravy are excellent. Note: you have to ask for Crystal 'cause they don't have it on the tables.

Grits! MM is the only place I have found in the Bay Area that uses stone-ground grits. If you've only had those sad QO instant grits...well...you just haven've lived. Many of the dishes come with a side of cheese grits and you can order it separately. Also, last week they added shrimp grits to the menu which is quite good and the spiciness builds nicely. Note: I was kinda surprised to see cheese grits on a breakfast menu 'cause where I'm from its a supper side dish.

They have a brisket hash with poached eggs that we like quite a bit. I found the chili omelette to be very tasty (FYI - it comes with a hot chipotle sauce on it so you may want to request it on the side). Michael likes the salmon croquettes but given the lure of the other items on the menu, I doubt I'll order it much. Last week, a friend ordered the smoked chicken omelette which I got a bite of and now I can hardly wait until tomorrow 'cause that's what I'm having for breakfast. Oh...and they make their own bacon which is thick cut and very tasty.

Note: I think the servings are big (but I'm slimming) so I tend divide my meal as soon as I get it and take half away for later.

Saturday-Sunday Brunch is 9am to 2pm (Regular menu is available after 11am).

Anyway, its not my ideal Southern breakfast place since it doesn't have hash browns and CFS on the menu but its quite tasty and is now on our "breakfast regularly list". I recommend checking it out.
