Clancy's Fish Fry (Periodic Reposting)

G Wiv | Mar 3, 2003 07:45 AM

Since I wrote the following reviews of Clancy's I have been to Clancy's for Friday fish fry and the Wednesday fried chicken many times. Clancy's is just as good now, if not better, then when I was there the first time.

Best Fish Fry in Chicago

I have been following the Best Fish Fry in Chicago thread and wracking my brain trying to remember the name of the bar where I had a great fish fry 2 or 3 months ago. Well today being Friday I felt this afternoon would be an excellent time to try and find this tavern again. After driving up and down Lincoln Ave and stopping in a few bars that turned out to be the wrong ones. (I had to have a beer or two so they would not think I was rude) I finally found the PLACE.

Clancy's Pub has an ambiance like the Wisconsin taverns of my youth and a great all you can eat fish fry for 6.75$. The bartender was friendly and had a lovely Irish lilt to her voice. I had three helpings of beer battered Cod with fries and slaw. When I was finished with each portion she asked me if I would like more and really meant it, no skimping at Clancy's. She also refilled my coke without asking and at no extra charge. All the condiments are available from hot sauce to malt vinegar. Yes I will be back soon and no, I did not eat dinner tonight.

Enjoy,
Gary

Clancy's Fried Chicken

I was driving past Clancy's Pub and noticed that in addition to the Friday fish fry they have fried chicken on Wednesdays. I could not resist stopping in and giving it a try. It was really good, in the top two or three fried chickens I have ever eaten. The best being Chez Helene in New Orleans.

Four pieces ($5.50) were served with a cup of spicy slaw, bread and mashed potatoes. The chicken was crisp, moist and very tender, really good chicken. The only off note was the commercial taste of the gravy,
I am sure it was not homemade, I did not have the heart to ask though.

Clancy's is a bar with some table seating, good service and a very friendly staff, especially the bartenderess.

By the way, despite the upscale sounding name Chez Helene is not a upscale New Orleans restaurant, it is located in a somewhat rough neighborhood just outside the French Quarter and specializes in fried chicken, dirty rice and homestyle cajun food. If you are in New Orleans I suggest you give it a try.

Enjoy,
Gary
