OFF CITRUS - Review

Had a chance to visit OFF CITRUS this past week for dinner as I was in the area for business.

It's in Covina, and a bit out of the way, but well worth the diversion if you are in the area. As it's name suggests, it's located just a bit east of Citrus Ave., north of Badillo.

For starters we had the Spanish Tapas Sampler, which consisted of mushroom pate, goat cheese fritters, manchego cheese and a papaya salsa of some sort. It was very tasty, but the mushrooms lacked flavor and had a weird consistency. We also tried the Yuca Frita appetizer, which I don't see very often on menus - very addictive and satisfying.

For entrees, my friend tried the Off Citrus "pillows" - which was basically spinach, mushrooms, pinenuts, etc. stuffed into a puff pastry pocket and garnished with a garlic cream. Not bad, sort of like one of those Hot Pockets you can buy at the grocery store, but much more decadent. I opted for the Niman Ranch Lamb, which came diced (!) and was stewed in a tomato/garlic reduction and topped with feta cheese. Not bad.

For dessert we shared the flour-less chocolate cake that came served on a pudding base and topped with fresh whipped cream. Good contrast between creamy smooth and the rich, chalkiness of the cake.

Not a bad meal. Total damage for two came out to less than $65.
