Citizen Cake's Fruit Squares - Downhill?

nja | Aug 5, 200305:53 PM

I was walking by Citizen Cake over the weekend and recalled a discussion here about the amazing little "fruit squares," otherwise known as pate de fruits or fruit gelees. So I stopped in and bought four--blackberry, passionfruit, pineapple, peach--for a total of $5.

I should say this gently but I just can't: they sucked. Very little fruit flavor in all four, so little that it took me a while to figure out which of the two pink squares was peach and which was passionfruit. I've had amazing pate de fruits elsewhere--where a little bite tastes like an entire bowlful of fruit has been funneled into your mouth--and these were nowhere near that level.

I don't doubt that these used to be good, but the ones I had were not. So did I just get a bad batch, or have these things gone downhill?
