Chowish Park Slope Dominican

We had an very enjoyable dinner at El Viejo Yayo, a Dominican place on 9th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues (just below the supermarket).

Pernil (roast pork) was exactly right, with excellent flavor and a wonderful large chunk of roast skin. Yellow rice and red and black beans were just what you want them to be. Yayo Steak with Mushrooms was a large piece of skirt steak with canned mush and a chicken-based sauce -- very decent.

Portions are enormous, and the waitress was the ideal mix of plesantness and efficiency. The kitchen was a bit slow, but I think everything was done from scratch.

Not dirt cheap (they kill you on the drinks), but affordable.

We're definitely going back.
