Ah this once a year Maine review is becoming an annual tradition. Last year I wrote up Joshua's (which I loved), and this year more simple and casusual spot.
My wife and I stumbled into this hidden gem called Grans Chowder House in Kennebunkport. I say stumbled because this place probably has some of the worst visibility in the town. We were actually going for fudge and didn't even see the spot until atop of it. But after days of fried fish platters and overly heavy/creamy chowders, the potential for some really good chowder seemed like just what we needed. And it just seemed right. The place seemed
Not much to look at, but the space is clean and there are a few tables outside to enjoy the sun. The owner was really nice and let us taste all the soups on the menu. They were all great, but I'm a huge haddock chowder fan, so thats what we went with. The best part about this chowder was that it got better while I ate it. The subtle flavours of the fish, lemon, and cream all come together perfectly. So good in fact that we figured we couldn't find anything better for dinner, so we got a bunch to go. Plus some cold strawberry soup for dessert. We didn't try the paninis or salads, so I can't attest to the quality of those dishes, but the soup was first rate.
I'm so happy to have stumbled on this place. A great alternative to the other lunch options in town,.
