Choucroute, etc

Had an above average choucroute at Royale Brasserie in San Diego. The sauerkraut was a bit too astringent (it had not been washed enough to qualify as an excellent choucroute product) and it lacked the requisite juniper berry and caraway flavor. However, the meats were excellent and served with two types of mustard.

The beet salad was good--terrific product but slightly too sweet dressing.

The pate de foie gras was shockingly expensive--$18 for one measly slice of the terrine. It tasted good but for that price, 3 slices should have been served. The fig and shallot chutney were superfluous.

The tarte tatin was the best I've ever had--inside or outside of Paris and an unbelivable bargain at $7 for two. Rich carmelized apples, puff pastry, and freshly whipped cream. It would be worth a visit for this alone.
