Help Choosing New Mandoline

loves2cook82 | Nov 23, 201812:02 PM     5

I currently just have the cheap handheld OXO slicer that I picked up at my local grocery store one day when I had a last minute hankering for au gratin potatoes. I get by with it, but it's not the best. Food sometimes gets stuck in the gap between the platform and the blade and I have to back up and pull out the stuck slice. Because it's just a flimsy platform, it's hard to apply even pressure and my slices often end up crooked (thick at one end, thin at the other). And the hand protector? Worthless. It has tiny plastic nubs that in no way actually pierce and hold onto the food you are slicing. I never use the hand guard, but do have a cut resistant glove I wear anytime I use the slicer.

So, I want a nice new mandoline. I don't want a super expesive one that I'm hardly every going to use because it's too bulky to set up and store. I've been trying to do my research and am torn between the OXO V-Blade and a Benriner. I've read the review on Serious Eats (https://www.seriouseats.com/2015/01/w...) where the OXO got top props and the Benriner was only really recommended if you needed more flexibility instead of pre-set thicknesses. I usually trust Serious Eats, but I've read other reviews that say the OXO isn't so great and Benriner is the way to go.

I'd love to get some input from others out there.
