has anyone tried these (morocan/?)israeli fried turnovers at the falafel place (i think it's called village schwarma) near the old astor theater. it's on the west side of 6th avenue next to the subway entrance. they had a tray of them out the other day but i didn't get them at the time. when i went back saturday night they were not available.
i'm in the area fairly often, but it would still be good to know if the owner makes them on a regular basis, or if it's just a sporadic thing. maybe he just doesn't make them on saturdays. (the place is kosher but open friday night and saturday...like the second avenue deli.)
either way, they are worth seeking out: sambucas (sp?) are (usually) filled with mashed chickpeas and the filling is refered to as "choomoos", but it's generally not as tart or spicy as a choomoos dip/spread. i'm pretty sure i noticed fried onions being in the mix also. haven't had one in five years or more. they are rich and they are a tasty, tasty treat; good at room temp, great heated up.
