New Chonqing offering very decent Sichuan in Kerrisdale

I had been meaning to take the parentals to this place under Golden Ocean on West 41st for ages and we finally got the chance in October. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, the prep and even the chance for a bit of ma la. I think you'd have to insist to get da la but it could be done.

We started with a more than competent hot and sour soup and some deep fried bread. Then came the boiling fish (aka) water boiled fish which I am a sucker for. It was well done here, not too much corn starch and a good tingle from the hua jiao on top. We wanted some veg and went for the tried and true green beans which again were well executed if not a wow. The waiter's eyebrows went up just a tad when we ordered the pork kidney (I think he realized we were somewhat serious at that point) and it was a worthy rendition. The final dish which took a bit longer to come was the fried vermicelli which I adored. It had a lovely smokey flavour to it. For $75 plus tip we had enough food for six though there were only four of us. Service was very friendly and the male server was particularly helpful.

Really great to know we don't have to venture out to Richmond or Burnaby to get reasonable Sichuan...
