When I was a kid in the late 50s, the chocolate ice cream sodas I had in my first hometown, and those from a few other places, seemed to have a cinnamon and/or nutmeg undertone. I can conjure up that flavor in my mind, but I never get any sodas that match it. Could it be a matter of the carbonated water being mixed just right to bring out extra flavors? I'm sure that Bertoni's in Mt. Pulaski, IL (central IL farm country) couldn't get hold of any upscale syrups in 1957. Was there a syrup, in more common use in those days, with the hints of spice flavors, that has a modern-day equivalent?
