While stocking up my pantry at the Super 88 near the South End, I came across this humble snack that I haven't had in a decade or so. The dough is soft, somewhat dense and slightly stretchy beneath a thick crackly shell attained from deep frying. The best part of this snack is the salty-sweet flavor combo in the dough; simply fabulous when this balance is right!
I'm betting that I've overlooked it at the Chinatown bakeries. Has anyone tried or seen one lately? The English translation should be something along the lines of salty fried bread.
