More Chinese Desserts From The South

For some reason, while the San Gabriel Valley generally is king when it comes to Chinese food, much of the advancement in Chinese desserts comes out of the south, particularly from Cerritos and Orange County. Many of the sweet tooth pioneers have come from that region, including 85°C, Guppy House and Milk and Honey. So it’s no surprise that the famous Taiwanese dessert chain, Meet Fresh, has chosen Irvine and the Diamond Jamboree shopping center for its first US location. Though it’s been open since late July, I just made my first visit to the place and signs are they are thriving with over 260 Yelp reviews already, and draw crowds despite a pricey drink and dessert menu where most items run between $5 and $7.50. Their signature item appears to be taro balls for $6.50. The taro tofu pudding was excellent, but I’m not sure if it’s worth $6. It'll be interesting to see if Meet Fresh follows its predecessors and eventually heads up towards Los Angeles.
