Chinatown restaurant

We're meeting a friend from Rome in NYC for a week of art, food and fun. Rome has only a few (poor quality) Chinese restaurants, and we'd like to introduce our friend to what Chinese food can and should be. It's been (too) many years since we've lived in New York and we do not know which Chinese restaurants are currently the best. For years we went to Phoenix Gardens, but we thought it lost its way years ago when it moved uptown.

We prefer Cantonese, Shanghai, etc, to Szetchuan, and especially like seafood and squid, squab and duck, and are very open to unusual and authentically ethnic cooking. BYOB a plus.

Recommendations are much appreciated. Thanks.
