China Village -- thank you!!!

Prabhakar Ragde | Aug 16, 2003 12:42 AM

In Berkeley for our usual two-week summer visit. I will write a full report at the end, but I wanted to thank Melanie, Ruth, and all the Chowhounds who posted about China Village. We ate dinner there last night, and it was the best Chinese meal I've had in ages. The spicy diced rabbit (a cold appetizer) had a flavour I haven't tasted since visiting Chengdu in 1987. It was followed by the Sichuan boiled beef, village special lamb, hunan smoked pork with string bean, eggplant in spicy garlic sauce, and spicy sauce potato strips (a dish I tried a few times to make at home with a notable lack of success). The eggplant was a bit too sweet, and the lamb a bit dry, but otherwise it was an exemplary meal. The restaurant is right across from Toy-Go-Round, which we visit on every trip -- I'm kicking myself for not checking out the restaurant earlier, but it looks so generic from the outside. Our kids are outgrowing TGR, but they thought China Village was great, so we'll definitely go back. --PR

(PS Our woman server asked about our ethnicities, and then asked my opinion of Indian restaurants in the area -- yet another sign this is not your typical Chinese joint.)
