Chicken Meets Rice | Santa Clara

Melanie Wong | Aug 12, 201805:33 PM

Three weeks ago on my way south, I pulled off in Santa Clara to grab a quick lunch at the newish Chicken Meets Rice. A specialist in Hainan chicken rice, it does a huge business in lunch take-out knocking out orders very fast, and also has a few tables inside and out.

For me,
#2 THE FOODIE Chicken Rice: Poached Chicken + Fried Chicken ordered dark meat with skin, CMR Sauce + Sweet Chili, Chick-arrones, $12.95. In addition, I helped myself to the self-serve ginger-scallion oil and chopped jalapeño chiles. I loved the idea of having as much ginger-scallion as I wanted.

This is a good version but not as tasty as the recent Hainan poached chicken I'd had at Hanoi Chicken Noodle in San Leandro. A couple reasons: the meat was cooked a bit longer thus not as succulent and smooth, and the bird is not a yellow feather chicken that has superior taste. I liked the fried version better though it too was cooked beyond done. The array of sauces was fun to play with. And they were needed to give the chicken a flavor boost as well as the rice that was not as chicken-y as it should be. The soup was okay, a bit too salty. I loved that bit of crunchy chicken skin chick-arrone. The plate also included steamed broccoli and cucumbers for a complete meal. This was a bit more than I could eat at one sitting.

Who else has tried it?
