My parents took the baby and gave us a night out this weekend, and we went to the Chef's Table, on Franklin Ave. in Franklin Lake, NJ. This is a very nice restaurant.
I had a wonderful soft-shell crab, thick and meaty, served over a corn cake with beurre blanc flavored with pink peppercorns (this was offered as a main dish, but they made it for me as an appetizer); cassoulet, which was everything it should be; and tarte tatin (one of the world's five perfect desserts, though this rendition wasn't perfect, just delicious). My wife had a remarkable salad of lettuce, blueberries, roasted pecans, roquefort, and a raspberry vinaigrette (it sounds odd, but it works); rib-eye steak with clove-scented sweet potatos; and a dessert that was essentially a fancy ice cream sundae.
The restaurant is BYO. Dinner for two came to about $105 with tip. Reservations are a must on weekends; I don't know about weekdays.
