Spotted at Whole Foods yesterday: Hooks 15-year aged cheddar, @ $92.99/lb (no, I didn't mistype that). I've tasted their 10-year version (which is now up to $44.99/lb), and it was very good -- but to my taste, not that much better than the 4-year Black Diamond I usually get from Sam's at $9.99/lb.
The cheesemonger said the 15-year is much better than the 10-year, and pointed out that it had lots of crystals. I told her unless she wanted to offer me a taste, that I'd just have to take her word on how much better it is. She said, "sorry, no tastes". I wasn't curious enough to spend $8 on a snack-sized piece. Is it me, or is this just crazy pricing?
