Just had a b'day dinner with friends at small, fun place -- Sushi Aki at 14554 Vanowen Blvd. in Van Nuys. Sushi, sashimi, set meals, tempura, etc. Wait staff was a little slow, but the tall Sapporos were good and the food was pretty good too, although nothing fancy, a good neighborhood spot. Prices are about $2.50 per piece for both cut rolls and hand rolls. Vegetarians are catered to equally. They also make their spicy rolls from a level 1 to a level 10 and if you can eat two level 10 rolls, they take your picture for their Wall of Fame and you get a t-shirt to boot. Lunch specials daily for $5.95, dinner was around $11. Not much parking, place gets crowded pretty fast (we got there at 5:30 on a Sunday and by 6:15 it was packed). Makes a change from the usually crowded (and often overpriced) sushi in SC and along Ventura. Check it out.
