Chava's on Mission Street in SF

I went to Chavas yesterday for an early dinner - what a disappointment. The waitress brought us a plate with guacamole and tomato salsa with chips right after we sat down. The guacamole was ok - nothing spectacular. The chips were store-bought.

I ordered a carne asada that tasted like ammonia - I could not eat it after 2 bites. Perhaps they do a bad job of cleaning their grill or something. The carne asada was served with rice (good) and refried beans. I also got a salad with thousand island dressing.

My mom ordered the milanesa, which was good and did not suffer from the same nasty taste as my carne asada. She was happy with her order. My father ordered the birria (goat), which he declared awful. It was served as a soup rather than on a plate with the sauce spooned over it.

The tortillas are made on the spot, but they were pretty tasteless. I did complain to the waitress about the carne asada after finishing our meal and she said that I should have told her since she would have brought me something else. She was very gracious and told her cook of my complaint.

Any other good/bad experiences with the new Chavas?
