Actually, I dislike the sprawling Atlanta wannabe since I grew up there in the 60-70's. But recent visits back to the hometown have revealed a surprising foodie surprise.
Charlotte should rename it's deteriorated Central Avenue as "International Boulevard". The incredible variety of ethnic restaurants and groceries that have sprung up in recent years is astounding.
Salvadoran, Peruvian, Vietnamese, Dominican and lots of region-specific Mexican restaurants are opening every day, due to the low rents. These folks apparently were "sponsored" by some of the Bible-thumping evangelical churches as "refugees" and their influence (and large families) have gradually taken root to provide an awesome variety of food options that would astound even Big-City gourmets of unusual cuisine.
If you are going to Charlotte for business or a visit, reply here and I'd be delighted to tell you about some funky but incredibly unique places that will make you glad you asked.
It doesn't disturb me as much anymore to eat in the land of Jim and Tammy Faye... it's exciting!
