I've always liked Charanga (Mission near 20th), and considered it great value for money. I hadn't been in over a year, however and Friday's dinner won't have me rushing back.
The service was pleasant if more haphazard than I remembered, but the food lacked pizzaz. My favorite salmon tostaditos with black beans and pickled onions are no longer on the menu. The salads needed a zipper vinaigrette, and included some ingredient substitions that the server didn't note when we ordered them. The shrimp and calamari was a generous portion with a bland coconut-infused sauce. The desserts were enormous and I loved the ginger cake but the bread pudding was dry.
Would be interested if I caught Charanga on an off night or if this is a trend.
