Chapli Kabob @ N. Y. Giant Pizza & Gyros Halal Food, Fremont

Long ago, Ruth Lafler and I did a tour of barbecue joints that led us to find Damavand Market, a neat Persian grocer and halal butcher. Next door, an Afghan cafe was just getting ready to open. The site has been through several iterations of owners, I gather, and now serves pizza ("we use fresh cheese and fresh dough every day") and Kronos gyros. It still has a handful of Afghan offerings too.

I stopped by on Monday to give it a try. I think I made a strategic mistake in ordering a chabli kabob. A boulani from a pizza maker probably would have been a better bet.

The chabli kabob, $6.99, was decent, but no where near as good as De Afghanan Kebab House's. The photo below shows the two big and beefy patties. The spicing was not as assertive and the crust was not as browned and crunchy. The chick pea and potato side was overly tart and didn't have the fresh chili and cilantro nuances I'd liked so much at De Afghanan. Also, the bread was thinner and stale.

Luckily, I'd also ordered french fries, $1.75. They were excellent with almost a buttery taste and a beautiful golden brown crunch.
