I have been to Chapati for Indian food twice in the past month and have been pleased with it. I still think you can do better in the north suburbs with India Palace in Roseville (for north Indian) or Udupi in Columbia Heights (for south Indian). However, Chapati is a great option for people in the south and western suburbs.
Chapati is located at 70th and Amundsson (just off Hwy 100 at 70th Street) in a somewhat industrial neighborhood of Edina. It is in a space that used to house a really good Mexican restaurant a few years back (I have forgotten the name). Chapati's first location opened a few years ago on Division Street in Northfield, in the old Archer House space formerly occupied by Treats.
I had some work down in that area last week and we ordered take out one night from there and one night from Mandarin Kitchen. People in my group almost universally preferred the Indian from Chapati than the Chinese from Mandarin Kitchen, my pick for #1 Chinese in the city. Now I know this is an apples to oranges comparison, but still pretty good praise.
I thought the food was a little up and down, but I would good give it a solid B overall. What did we get?
chicken tikka - excellent, very flavorful and moist
saag paneer - good, but I have had better
chicken dopyaza - very good
lamb rogan josh - so-so, the lamb was little gamey tasting
bangan baratha - so-so, not as smokey as I like it
chicken tikka masala - very good
kheer - excellent
shrimp vinadloo - okay, but too much tomato paste taste
chicken biryani - very good
My first trip there was for the lunch buffet, which was very good. The food tasted fresher than it often does in buffets. They had a nice range of options.
