This is for Foodfirst. It's been too long that I have failed to make the post. But, I want to say thanks for the Chao Vit Vit tip. We took a cab from the Sheraton, with the staff thinking we were a bit nuts. We were "VIP's" there, staying in a suite, etc. But, each we'd come down and ask to be taken to the kind of place their guests never asked about. They also thought it a bit unusual we would want to go to a poultry restaurant about 7 days after the Saigon poultry ban (avian flu) was lifted.
So, we went to the street you recommended and went to the Caho Vit place you said be careful not to go to. After about 5 minutes we figured it out. No big round crackers, food was okay, but did not look as described - no deep golden color to the broth. No heady aroma, etc. So, after eating about half o it to be polite, we got-up and walked two doors down to the other place. What a revelation! Everything you said about it was true. Great stuff!
Thanks again Foodfirst,
p.s. - The crab place was pretty cool too.
