Chan's Seafood Minneapolis: Missing the Magic

I've been three times and have had so-so to bad experiences. First time I had the 3 seafood combo (I forget the name on the menu), shrimp, scallops and squid. It was all right, delicately flavored, i.e., a little dull. Next time I had the whole sauteed fish (tilapia). It was not good. Fish tasted off (which was strange, as they took it out of the live tank), sauce was too thick and weird-tasting. Last time I had beef with Chinese broccoli. Again, just okay, but the beef was a bit tough and flavorless. It compared very poorly to the Mongolian beef at the Phoenix which is fabulous.

Am I ordering the wrong things? I keep hearing all kinds of chowhound raves about this place and I really *want* to love it. It's my kind of place. Advice would be appreciated.
