Chameau: Superb

Dylan Y | Dec 24, 200404:42 PM

Finally got around to Chameau - the new Moroccan restaurant on Fairfax near Oakwood.

Verdict: I doubt there's a better Moroccan restaurant in the country.

Highlights included the merguez sausage on hummous, with homemade harissa (the sausage is quite spicy - it doesn't really need the harissa but I put some on anyway. The waiter will try to take away the harissa, but keep it on the table to eat with the tagines you order later in the meal).

The duck bastilla was untraditional but still the best bastilla I've ever had. A single layer of crispy homemade phyllo surrounds the duck - minimalist but superb.

The lamb shoulder tagine features meltingly tender lamb, lightly carmelized alomnds, and perfect couscous.

The potato and fennel tagine - a small side dish - had a flavor intensity I can't explain.

Disappointments? The bread is medicore, but it's served with an incredible tomato eggplant dip, flavored oil, and fresh olives. The dessert we had, the "almond snake," was not terribly exciting.

But - overall this is an absolutely wonderful restaurant. I recommend that you eat everything family style - even though no one else seems to.
