Chai's and Verde in Durham

I went to Erwin Square looking for Chai's last night after the favorable review recently on this board. We stopped at Verde's for a drink for the first time - the atmosphere was hipper than I expected, and the menu looked great and cheap. We only ate one thing, the delicious sounding stir-fried calamari in lime and chilies (or something like that). They were kind of rubbery and had been stir fried in butter with a little garlic, maybe one lone chili tossed in and served with a lime on top. Needless to say, we were not too impressed.
We then went looking for Chai's, which is apparently in Erwin TERRACE, on Erwin Rd., not Erwin Square, where Verde is.
So, we hopped in the car and went over there. It seemed like more of a lunch place - very clean, order at the counter, no great ambience. They don't have beer and wine yet (though it is on the menu), but they let us go grab a six pack down the street and bring it in. The Thai Spicy Curry and Thai Yellow curry rice bowls were very good and quite spicy, I was suprised. Those, unfortunately, were ordered by my wife and friend. I ordered the chicken with Thai Spicy sauce. It was hot as hell, but the chicken made me think of jerky - leathery and tough is good when you are home on the range, but I was not. Final verdict: good value, sterile with no ambience.
