Do chain restaurants create a critical mass downtown Minneapolis?

Jeff Grann | May 15, 200309:40 AM     14

A recent Star Tribune article reveals city council member Lisa Goodman's views on chain restaurants. Here is the quote from the article, "Minneapolis City Council Member Lisa Goodman says the chains help create a critical mass that makes downtown Minneapolis a dining destination." I don't believe this is true. I live in Roseville and I can eat at as many chain restaurants as I wish here, without fighting traffic and downtown construction or paying downtown tax and parking fees. I want Minneapolis to be a great city. I believe it can be great by changing its current direction toward more chain restaurants downtown. Locally owned restaurants buy high quality local produce, pay local income tax, offer unique one-of-a-kind dining experiences, and draw positive national attention to the city. I wrote to Lisa and recommended placing a 5-year moretorium on the development out-of-state chain restaurants downtown Minneapolis. This will give the city time to study the impact of the current restaurant mix and inspire others to begin recreating the mojo lost with Cafe un deux trois and Dish. Basically, I believe chains threaten high quality chow. If you feel the same please email Lisa Goodman (lisa.goodman@ci.minneapolis.mn.us) and try to change her point of view.

Sincerely,
