So I wanted to share my experience of Central last night because there have been a lot of up and down reviews:
I went with a group we were 5 in all. All but one of us had a cocktail and sparkling water since it was so so hot. The restaurant could have been cooler, but judging from the heat outside the AC was probably on full blast and it still wouldn't have been able to make that much of a dent in the balmy temps.
Our server was delightful. I wish I would have caught his name, he explained everything, made sure our food and drink refills arrived quickly, didn't remove anything too soon, and didn't rush us at all to leave the table even though we were an early reservation and they were crowded, he even helped us make fun of a friend at the table when we asked. He was really exceptional and didn't even give us a look when 4 credit cards went into the bill and one of them was for two people.
We shared four appetizers: Soft Shell Crab- tasted like tempura soft shell crab crispy and very good no excess seasoning, the coleslaw served with it had good flavor and wasn't too mayonnaisey. Onion Tart- it had a very thin crust, excellent flavor it might have been my favorite of the appetizers we ordered. Faux gras (chicken liver pate) and Duck Terrine- I liked the pate thought it had a good flavor for pate- other posts said it was too salty I didn't think this although I grew up eating southern food so I tend to like saltier and sweetier food then some palates, I wasn't as wild about the duck terrine it was ok, but not incredible, but the other people at the table loved it and wouldn't let them clear it till it was all gone. Cheese Puffs- I was a little dissapointed I had heard great things and found them a little dry and not the taste I had hoped.
Main Course- I had the lobster burger- it tasted excellent. It was really mostly lobster a little filler, but it seemed about right to bind it so it wasn't crumbling. It was definitely very rich, perhaps a tad bit too much sauce, but not to the point that it wasn't very good, just some excess drips out the back. Really it was excellent and I wasn't at all disappointed. The fries were crisp, well seasoned, some of them looked like they were going to be soggy, but when actually picked up and eaten they weren't at all. BF loved the fries and others kept stealing them from our plates. BF had the hanger steak said it was well marinated, cooked to his temperature preference medium rare, he really enjoyed it. Two others ordered the prawn special which was good I had a bite, but I liked my burger better. One actually was chowing down on the snap peas though and he never eats many veggies, said they were excellent. Other a fellow Chowhound (maybe she will write her thoughts) had the salmon I don't know what she thought.
Dessert- Split the Kit Kat Bar with the BF and after that much food it really was best split. It was very chocolatey and also had some hazelnut flavors and a good crunch at the bottom. My outrageous sweet tooth was very happy. They serve it with homemade vanilla ice cream which was very good. Fellow Chow had the homemade sorbets which looked great.
When the bill came it was $47 per person split evenly. Not counting 3 drinks which came from the bar and tip which were we very generous with because of our great server. We all agreed we wanted to come back. It was an excellent deal for the food, and we really loved our server and the fact they didn't rush us, as we tend to take as much time talking as eating. As we walked out there must have been someone important eating as there were four secret service present, we didn't gawk to see who it was, all I could think was poor guys having to look at all that food as they sipped water.
