Central Barbecue--Memphis

randal cooper | Jul 11, 200207:43 PM

Based on a newspaper review and a couple of comments elsewhere I decided to give Central Barbecue (On Central Ave in Memphis) a try. I picked up fixins for six sandwiches and half a slab of wet ribs to take home.

Note: If I'd stayed there, I could have had a glass of pretty good beer; a mark in the restaurant's favor.

The ribs were done pretty well. Tender, but the wet sauce was a little too sweet and covered up the taste of the meat. Next time I'll try the dry ribs and sauce 'em myself. Sandwiches (assembled at home) were pretty good; the meat was not particularly smoky, and the sauce had a mild kick to it, but the slaw had been composed to be a very good side dish, not an adornment for a barbecue sandwich. This I learned after biting into a sandwich and tasting red bell pepper and onion. Next time, no slaw on the sandwich.

Overall, the experience was a mild disappointment. It's worth a try (barbecue being somewhat subjective), and I'll give it another shot sometime soon with a little more discretion in my ordering.
