Central Asian Restaurant Row in Kensington

Ditmas Ave between McDonald and Ocean Parkway now features no fewer than four Central Asian restaurants. There's Old Baku (Azerbaijani, Jewish), Cafe Afsona (Uzbeki), Gayana's Bakery, and Sim Sim Cafe (Azerbaijani).

I ate in the backyard of Old Baku this weekend and had some very good food. There's no English menu, so we let Baku's English-speaking owner, Nate, order for us. We had wonderful little pelmeni, outstanding lamb and beef-stuffed grape leaves (about the best I've had), good goat kharcho and a platter of mixed kebabs. The starters, which included an eggplant spread, tomatoes with feta, a generic salad, and cold fish, were mediocre.
