Why Cast Iron

The "Why Le Creuset" thread got me thinking ...why cast iron? I have a cast iron frying pan that I seem to use sole for making Tarte Tatin. I also have a L/C grill pan, which is not enamalled, that I think I am not using properly. So, what else should I be using these pans for, and how?
