Carlucci Downers Grove

CJ | Mar 17, 200410:27 PM

Just returned from dinner at Carlucci in Downers Grove. Did not sample everything, but can report on what we had: 1) Yukon Gold gnocchi in duck ragu was equal to any gnocchi we've had in Italy. Creamy pillows of potato dough in a flavorful sauce made with chunks of duck. 2) Spaghetti with Mussels, Octopus, Calamari, Shrimp. Excellent combination - pasta served very hot and the sauce get tastier as you run out of pasta and taste it by itself. Velvety tomato sauce with lots of red pepper flakes. 3) Two of us shared a "Veal Skirt Steak with Arugula" which we requested rare. Three good-sized strips of veal steak properly grilled, with serving of arugula in an oil-lemon dressing. Great combination and very good meat.

On past visit in November, we had a very good risotto with scallops ( on tonight's menu as a special) and lamb osso buco (nicely done, but very salty the night I had it).

Menu is interesting and food quality is good. Wish we could say better things about wait staff tonight. On first visit, we had very professional, attentive waiters. Tonight it was one of those "Hi, I'm So-and-So. I'll be helping you tonight." Once we didn't order drinks, he lost interest. Came back to take the order, but didn't ask how we wanted the veal steak cooked. Served the spaghetti but had to be asked to bring cheese. Ignored empty glass of ice water. At least the Captain (Chris) came by and asked how things were, then corrected the service himself. It was a slow night, being Wednesday in March and St. Patrick's Day to boot, but that should have given this young waiter more time to serve properly.

We recommend this Carlucci and will return again.
