Passing through Los Osos last month, I stopped by Carlock's Bakery.
Some older posts here lament that it has fallen off since the original owner retired. Looking at the displays, I'd have to agree that there's not much that looks that appetizing or special. But I'll note that checking the website today to write this post, it has been relaunched with an updated design. So perhaps the actual bakery is in for a re-do too.
However, one exception that caught my eye was the German Bierocks aka runzas. A rare bird in our part of the world and more common in the Midwest, it's interesting that I've stumbled upon them twice this summer in California and I can't help but wonder who else has been serving them up anonymously. A bready wrapper filled with ground beef, onion and cabbage, this one had a creamier mouthfeel from some thickener or perhaps even dairy. Not bad.
I also thought that the cinnamon rolls looked good. After a disappointing experience at Pismo's Old West, I've been seeking them out at neighboring towns and discovered that SLOCo seems to be cinnamon roll central. This was a very nice one with a tender Danish-like dough, lots of raisins, moderate cinnamon and a some soft icing. I'd get this again.
What else is good here?
