Caribbean Breeze

microwave15 | Feb 24, 2005 09:19 AM

My wife locked herself out of her aptertment last night, and ended up waiting for me across the street at Caribbean Breeze, the recently opened pan-latino restaurant near the Ballston Metro (Fairfax Dr & Randolph St).

Normally, I would avoid a place like this. From the curb, it looks like a "fun place" where you'd expect to buy a great daquiri or mojito, and pick up your next date.

Anyway, when I finally got back, we decided to have a light dinner, and the food was surprisingly good. We just had appetizers, but definitely will return to explore the entrees. I could have used more spice, but I wouldn't call it flavorless.

There are probably a number of places you can go in the DC area to get more spicy and/or authentic food, but if you're stuck in Ballston with the few dining options that it offers, I recommend it.

The service was excellent...very charming and helpful waitress. I think they've only been opened a week, but I didn't experience the usual chaos that new restaurants have as they feel their way through. I found the owner's other restaurant is Cafe Salsa in Alexandria.....I've never been.

Dinner w/appetizers and dessert will run a couple approximately $40-50.
