Carbon Steel wok coating

Oddlesofnoddles | Mar 29, 202011:11 PM     12

I just bought a carbon steel wok from Amazon that has some kind of coating that prevents it from rusting. I followed youtube instructions rather than the actual instructions and only partially removed the coating by boiling it for a few minutes in water without scrubbing it after (as the official instructions say). Then I proceeded to season it once on stove top followed by another round in the oven. However after stir frying a few consecutive dishes the seasoning started falling off.

I think the reason for that is because of the coating, which mostly likely wasn't removed properly. (according to https://www.chowhound.com/post/season...) Judging by how much effort people have put in to remove the coating my simple boiling without even the scrubbing recommended in the official instructions most likely wasn't enough.

My question is can I still salvage the wok by removing the seasoning and attempting to remove the coating, or has the coating become permanently stuck on due to having undergone a few rounds of seasoning (including once in the oven) already? Or do I not need to worry about the coating at all?

I'm assuming the coating is toxic.
