Capers survival

I unthinkingly drained almost all of the liquid out of a jar of capers as I was trying to get the little things out of there last week, and then just put the top back on and put the jar back in the fridge. They smelled fine this morning when I checked, but do you think I can still use them? And if I want to preserve them longer, should I put some kind of liquid back in the jar? If so, what? Water? Salt water?

Please advise.
