I saw an article-let about candied citrus rind from France for $15. + shipping (for less than a pound). That might make a nice luxury Xmas present.
OTOH: before Thanksgiving I was making a cranberry relish with oranges and other fruit, then candied the leftover orange peel. Dead simple. And if you throw in a little grenadine, the color's terrific. They're marvelously tender and tasty.
I think a gift of homemade orange and lemon peel would make a terrific present for anyone with a sweet tooth. Maybe a few chocolate truffles rolled in minced candied ginger peel, pistachios, etc. thrown in would make it over the top. Get a good chocolate to make the ganache and the rest is easy and would be a good amusement for any children in the vicinity.
One more note about citrus peel. Some time ago I read that dried tangerine peel is prized by the Chinese (the older the better). So I dried some and now whenever I make a braise or stew, I throw some in and like the result. And it looks pretty in a glass jar.
