Camel Cheese on the Rise in Mauritania

I came across this article in the Los Angeles daily legal newspaper yesterday. In Nouakchott, Mauritania a company called Tiviski SARL, the world's only camel cheese factory, is fighting EU trade regulators in an attempt to get permission to export camel cheese. The cheese tastes similar to goat cheese but looks and spreads more like brie or camembert. High-end outlets like Harrods and Paris's Fauchon have shown interest but, because Mauritania cannot show that it has eradicated foot and mouth disease and lacks facilities to prove that its products are safe for human consumption, it may be as long as 8-9 years before the cheese is exported.
