New Cambodian Restaurant | Stockton

Last month I grabbed a quick dinner at New Cambodian Restaurant. You order and pay at the counter, then the food is brought to your table.

I tried the Phnom Penh Noodle Soup, $6.50. One of my favorite dishes at southern Vietnamese restaurants is Nam Vang noodles, that is modeled after this dish. So it was rather disappointing to not like this version of the Cambodian original more. The soup stock relied too much on MSG for flavor and depth. The sliced pork was dry and tough, the pieces of liver were bitter, and the shrimp was overcooked and cottony. The thin rice noodles were gummy.

To diversify my risk on trying a spot for the first time, I had also ordered a couple of grilled items. Lao sausage, $1, served on a skewer was grilled well with some smoky nuance, but also had an off-note of herbal bitterness. I liked the beef stick, $1, more with its chewy pieces of sticky, marinated beef.

Looking at the menu again now, the noodle soup that I ordered was one of the lowest priced soups. Maybe the kitchen puts more effort into the other items? In any case, if anyone's tried this place, I'd love to hear what's best to order. It seemed to be popular, and I noticed that the other parties all had a plate of beef sticks on their tables. Other than that, the ordering seemed to be all over the board with curries, rice plates and soups, not just one specialty.
