Cambodian Cuisine Mystery Odor

I had been anticipating going to Cambodian Cuisine in Ft. Greene for some time. I had tried in the past and was told that the wait would be 1/2 or more. Maybe I just assumed based on the crowds that it was going to be impressve. Well so much for that. Nothing we had was anything I'd get again. But one thing in particular--a beef with a kind of baby bok choy-like green in brown sauce arrived at our table and brought with it a terrible odor the likes of which I can only compare to...well, the zoo. Actually it smelled exactly like the zoo. In my experience the only culinary association I can make is to white pepper. In fact, I rather dislike white pepper for this very reason. But white pepper? I was not under the impression that white pepper was used widely in cambodian cooking. Not that I fancy myself an expert but...just curious.

And for anyone that's been to CC, what should I have ordered? I so wanted to love this place...
