After cruising the board for suggestions for my trip to Chicago with my wife on May 5-8 I thought I should give my opinion on the places we ate.
- Fox & Obel: Had a delicious brunch one morning. Great coffee as well. Fabulous take-out food for picinic in the park. Reminded me of Zabar's in NYC. Loved the olive oil / vinegar tasting bar.
- Lou Malnati's: Really enjoyed the deep dish. Fresh ingredients and got the "butter crust". Heard a lot of different opinions on this issue but we were happy with Lou's. Bonus: We got to watch while Pierce Brosnan was filming a movie in the area.
- Quartino: The highlight of the trip. The Italian small plates were all fabulous. We arrived before 7:00 on Saturday night w/o reservations. What can I say, we live on the wild side! We sat at the bar and had a wonderful time. Full menu service and met some great locals.
- House of Blues Gospel Brunch: This was more about the music than the food. Family style seating gives you a chance to meet new people and the buffet brunch was pretty good. Great choir from one of the local churches.
We had a great time in the city. People were very friendly. We stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel in the Carbon and Carbide building and walked everywhere we went. All the tulips and other flowers planted downtown were beautiful. My wife and I live in the SFO area and spend time in Manhattan regularly and we both thought Chicago was fantastic. Great food and great people. We chose not to go high-end with the dining but we really enjoyed everything we had. Next time, Charlie Trotter's, Italian Beef, and one of those famous Chicago steaks! Way to go Chicago!
