Ok, im going to have to join John Manzo's cry for help in supporting this small sushi shop on 11th Avenue and 11th Street SW.
After some time away from Calgary, i was walking home from a new job when i passed Uptown, and reminded myself i had to give it a try again to see how they were doing. Last time i was there, they were fairly new, and had the makings of a good shop, but needed a bit of work.
The short of it:
Service: Very friendly, efficient service. This hasnt changed at all. As good as i remember it. They clearly understand customer service, and provide some of the best service i've had in any restaurant in Calgary.
Price: Definitely on the inexpensive side - not all items are cheap mind you, but there are a lot of crazy good deals. Spicy Tuna rolls (which have improved from average to quite good) are 2.35 or something ridiculous like that. Sushi combo's average out at less than a buck a piece. Maki comes out at 2.20-2.50, and no Nigiri is priced more than 2.80. Prices haven't moved at all, which is surprising, considering how cheap it is.
Quality: not the best i've ever had, but some of the best value. They do a few inventive things that are different than your typical "Irasshaimase" restaurants, and the quality is decent - i have no complaints. Combined with the price, this place is tough to beat.
The last time i was in I told them that John had pushed me to come.. and they still remember a few months later. Tell them you heard about them from John from chowhound, enjoy some wonderful food and leave with a happy wallet.
They mentioned they are busy at lunch, but dinner is quite slow on many nights. Forget spending 30 bucks on Sushi at a normal restaurant - go get all the quality at half the price! Help ensure they survive and thrive in bringing us a good product at a great price. Businesses like these need Chowhound support.
