My wife (Brandi) and I went to Cafe Nouveau for the first time Friday night. I've never posted here before, but we had such a great time that I wanted to share our experience. Keep in mind that I am from Bangor, so I may be a bit starved for a really good restaurant.
The atmosphere and food were great (outstanding for Bangor) and the service was perfect by our standards. We were there for over two hours and the pacing was perfect and relaxing. Other diners seemed to be going elsewhere after dinner, and the same waitress matched the pacing to their needs.
There must have been 30 or more wines available by the glass ranging from 3.50 to 12.50 (most were from 4.50 to 7.00). We both know very little about wine, but we didn't feel intimidated in the least. They also had an excellent selection of bottled beers.
All the food was delicious. If I could have changed anything, it would have been the music and the dressing on my salad. There was a guitarist and he was a little too loud for the small room. They seem to have live music about one night per week. The balsamic dressing on the "Nouveau Supreme" salad was a bit too strong for a salad with so many other delicious ingredients.
With three glasses of wine (total, not each), cheese plate, salads, very small entrees, and desserts the bill came to just under $70. This was an expensive dinner for Bangor, but we would have willingly paid more for such an experience this close to home. We don't often go out to places where the bill runs this high, so I don't have a lot with which to compare this. I will say that the only time we have _ever_ had a better overall experience in Maine was when Firepond in Blue Hill was still open.
The Bangor Wine and Cheese Company next door to the Cafe Nouveau is a great place to sit with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. The staff there is always very friendly.
