Café Newsstand Opens in Healdsburg

Opening its door two weeks ago, Café Newsstand is Healdsburg’s official Peet’s Coffee and Tea retailer. In addition to coffee drinks, panini, breakfast pastries, Italian sodas, and gelato make up the food offerings. The refrigerator case is also stocked with Le Village lemonade, Original Nehi grape soda, Boyland's black cherry soda, and other soft drink esoterica.

A sofa and coffee table for lounging, bar tables for standing, a few four-tops, and tables for two on the sidewalk facing the Plaza make up the seating. In one corner is the Toyon Books News Annex with periodicals along with the Wine Spectator Library which offers the current issue as well as back issues.

The gelato is made by Gelato Paradiso of Watsonville. The article linked describes much more interesting flavors than the six offered at the café and I hope they’ll rotate them. A sample of pistachio didn’t move me. I bought a regular – one small scoop of crème caramel and one of strawberry – for $2 in a cup. The flavors have good intensity and freshness, albeit a touch too sweet. However, the texture is icy and easy to form into balls and not as dense and elastic as the best gelatos.

The café is open from 7am to 9pm daily and located on the corner of Healdsburg Ave. and Matheson, on the opposite end of the Hotel Healdsburg development from the Dry Creek Kitchen. Also worth noting that Provisions at Dry Creek Kitchen has closed.
