My new roomie burnt the heck out of my beloved twenty-year-old Revereware copper-bottomed 4-quart pot. She put water on to boil, left the kitchen, and forgot about the pot until the smell of scorching alerted her. I think I can salvage the inside of the pot (weird gray discoloration) with Bon Ami and patience. However, I am worried about the copper bottom. There is still copper but ... when I lifted up the pot, a layer of black soot fell off. Was that burnt copper? Is the copper layer too thin now? Or was that just the layer of discoloration that I never bothered to scrub off the copper?
What is the best way to tell if the pot is still OK?
I should find out soon, because I will expect her to pay for a new pot if one is necessary.
