Burger at the Metropolitan Grill, Review

So i found myself in the Met on 17th Avenue in Calgary and thought at 18 bucks their burger must be pretty special. As is the case with lots of overpriced food in Calgary, it was a letdown. Firstly, it’s served on a long rectangular ciabatta, which leaves the inch at either end devoid of anything other than dry bread. Not a great start. Also, because ciabatta doesn’t have much ‘give’ it was (almost) too big to fit in a mouth, which was both annoying and not a pretty sight. My wife looked at me in horror and shook her head as I tried to cram it in from different angles. The scene wasn’t too dissimilar from a wildlife documentary I once saw featuring an over-ambitious snake trying to eat a whole goat. The thing was dripping grease from all sides to the point where the ciabatta just disintegrated and I finished it picking pieces of meat, tomato and bacon off the grease-filled plate with my fingers. The portion of really average (surely frozen) fries that accompanied the burger was very small compared to other places and more importantly, it didn’t taste like an 18 dollar burger ingredients-wise. Greasy, ill thought out in design and just not that great a burger. To make things worse my wife’s food arrived stone cold and got sent back. We didn’t bother complaining as it was too busy and we felt sorry for the server, who was trying her best. I love my burgers in all forms but won’t be giving this one a try again. I'll stick to their beer and martinis instead.
