Visited friends in San Rafael last week and we hit Bungalow 44 in Mill Valley late Monday night on the spur of the moment. It was a lovely meal altogether. Great weather that evening, and we lucked out by getting a seat on the patio by the fireplace. What a warm and inviting space! The food was mostly good, though the potato sides stole the show.
My salad (grilled endive with goat cheese) wasn't spectacular, but the greens were nice and slightly smoky, good contrast to the goat cheese. I had the fish special, grilled sturgeon atop fish chowder, that was pretty good. Sturgeon was very large so a bit undercooked on the inside but the chowder was very light and refreshing (little cream, no flour). Two friends ordered the filet mignon, which were the hit of the table. Very tender and flavorful. I kept sneaking bites even though I'm not a steak person. We inhaled the truffle fries that came with it. Thin, perfectly crispy fries tosses in very fragrant truffle oil--party in my mouth!! Also at the table were delfina potatoes, roasted whole with parmesan cheese dusting on the outside--very very good. Mashed potatoes also a hit.
Finished with creme brulee (only ok, a bit heavy on the eggs) and a decadent, delicious molten chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream--party in my mouth part 2.
Service was excellent and very friendly.
I understand Bungalow 44 is relatively new so this was a promising meal. Will definitely be back when I'm in town again, at least for a glass of wine, truffle fries, and some dessert.
